SAN DIEGO – A large group of San Diego State students held a silent protest in front of the office of university President Elliot Hirshman over a man’s arrest on campus Thursday afternoon.
Video posted on Twitter by the African Student Union at San Diego State appears to show a confrontation between SDSU campus police officers and an unidentified black man that escalates, with officers putting the man onto the ground in an effort to detain him.
Campus police responded to calls of a man, who is not a student, acting erratically on campus and jumping a construction fence, according to a statement released by SDSU President Elliot Hirshman.
“The officers arrived at the scene and determined the person appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance,” read the statement. “In their attempt to arrest the person, he resisted and the officers restrained him until backup could arrive.
